Genius Hour Blog
It's week 2 of Genius Hour. Last week this website was created as week 1. Now we are diving into the project. This is what I have worked on for week 2 of my Genius Hour project. One of the many logos I have created Behind the BeatsTo begin creating the songs for Genius Hour, I started with the drum beats. Simple beats that will begin the flow of my songs. I found a pattern that I liked and then would loop it throughout the song. This was the main focus for creating the beginning of the songs. Start with the drums, add a beat, add a baseline, and finally add your main instrument or something interesting. What I mean by something being interesting is this instrument stands out. Normally, you wouldn't think to put this in like a country song or a pop song or a rock song, but it actually works well if you have the whole song planned out. An example of what would be called interesting is the trumpet in AJR's "Burn the House Down." The drums to each song were created during this time mostly. Since I have never created real music, I went to the main source for learning, Google. There I was able to find tutorials for simple drum beats by the program that I am using, BandLab. BandLab is a program available online or for IOS/Android. It allows for people to create music online and share it for others to hear. You create all the music online, post it, and can make money off of people "tipping" you for your music. I have it in both app and web form so I can do it wherever I am. BandLab Logo Art, Art, and More ArtAnother focus that I have had for the past 2 weeks is creating all of the cover art. I have made logos, backgrounds, single cover art, and the album cover art. I have decided not to show what they look like. My reasoning behind this is because I want people to be shocked by what they see. I have shown what the album cover would look like. If you look in the "Album" tab, you will find my album cover for this project. This is the only one I want to show so people can get an idea of what some of the song covers will look like. To create this, I am using Canva. I was searching for a way to make the cover art and I came across this and I absolutely love it. I have used this program for all of my logos and cover art so I highly recommend using this program. You can also use it to create Instagram stories and YouTube thumbnails. You can't access all of the images if you are using the free version though. That is my only problem with it. Conclusion of Week 2 and Moving ForwardAs week 3 is around the corner, I hope to begin more of the songs. I plan to add beats to the drums I have laid out and maybe even add the baseline as well. Another thing I hope to do as well is to start finding some good instruments to go along with what I have now, whether it be a trumpet, a violin, or a guitar. There is so much to start thinking about when creating music. I have to plan this song out before I can even begin creating the main portion of the song. With vocals, I am still deciding whether I should have them or not. If I want to have them should I do it myself or have someone else do it in a way I wouldn't think about? Collaborations, solos, or just the music? I still have questions needing to be answered and that is what I need to start thinking about.
