Genius Hour Blog
We have released a second song, created another hip hop song, and gained more followers. I will recap the second song's reaction and how stereotyped hip hop is based off of my experiences. That is what will be discussed on this week's blog for Genius Hour. The new collaboration of 26 beatmakers and vocalists The Release of "Remember"So the hip hop song I released is titled "Remember." There wasn't anything specific that went along with that title choice. That decision was based off of the way it sounded. It made me feel as though I was looking back on something. Just having reminiscent thoughts. So I titled it "Remember." Makes logical sense to me. Anyways it received the same views of "Genius Hour" and I gained some more followers from it. I also got invited to work on a project with some other beat makers. It's an emotional guitar beat that is really awesome. Just seeing some of the creativity that is there really was amazing. I will make sure to share it when I finish all of my songs for Genius Hour. The new song's cover art The Next OneWith the third song for hip hop, it has more of a dark tone to it. I'm wanting to get this dark feel of it that would be similar to an NF song (if you don't know who NF is, I am ashamed of you :) ). The pop songs will have the uplifting part, but I want these last 2 hip hop songs to really be emotional and stick with you. That's the plan. So I finished the third song and I am creating a fourth hip hop song that will be similar to the new one. The Stereotyping of Music: Hip HopI have been doing the hip hop tracks and I started to gain followers. Then I got messages about doing collabs. Then I got freaky messages. I will not dive into those because some were very inappropriate. But my point is, because of my music, people literally think I am a guy. Not saying there isn't anything wrong with being called that, but it truly shows how people only think guys are able to do certain genres of music.
I will say this. That was one of the weirdest messages that I have ever received and I do not want to receive a message ever again like that.

Oh my god, I have news to share. It's about the first song I released. Considering it was the first song I released to the public, this really felt good when I heard this. This week we are diving in to what happened after the release of "Genius Hour" and how a new boost of confidence is beginning to change my perspective. I will also talk about the next song I finished and how I plan on releasing it. The first comments I read a little bit after I dropped "Genius Hour" The Release of Genius HourAfter I dropped Genius Hour last week, it started getting many likes and comments. People were saying how fire the track was, some wanted me to release more, some didn't know how I didn't have followers on BandLab yet, and some wanted to do collabs with me. All in the span of like an hour. AN HOUR!!! I didn't know how to react. I was getting messages, reading comments, and gaining followers. I had to starting writing stuff down on post-it notes to keep track so I don't forget what I saw. I have a possible collab now in the works with another DJ which is pretty cool. He has a substantial fan base so this could really just boost my work in general. The first followers of Genius Hour. I'm still in shock because of how popular it got within the first hour. 15,600 people now have access to my songs from a community I am a part of. That's not including my follower's fan bases. Still as I am writing this, I keep seeing more likes and more comments. It's crazy to think about. I'm over the moon right now. The new song to be released What Now?With this now though, I have to start producing music at a much higher rate to keep people wanting to keep following me. Since Genius Hour was a such a favorite, I have to start producing music that is way better than Genius Hour.
With that said, I have finished another hip hop song that I also plan on releasing. I might wait a couple days though to see if more people continue to drop likes, comments, and collab requests. The second song is also a hip hop song, so we will see how this new song turns out. I plan on posting it in both categories to increase the span of where my music reaches. Hopefully that will also increase the number of followers I get and maybe I can collab with a popular artist on here. Moving forward I plan to release the new song and work on a pop song, so this one will take a little longer. That's why I am only doing 1 song this week. I haven't made a pop song before so I need to figure out the best way to do this. Drums and beats are what stand out in Hip Hop. Melodies and lyrics stand out in Pop. It's week 4 of Genius Hour, and we are diving in to the progress of the songs. After stating that I changed up some key elements last week, we have big news regarding the 8 songs. The first song that I plan on releasing, titled "Genius Hour" so that anyone can edit and change the title. The First SongBasically I have finished the first song's main instrument. Knowing that I have worked hard and finally there is the looks of an end product is just amazing to think about. Its one of the hip hop songs and so the song has a very electric feel to it. To create the full length of this song, I used a "Bless 'Em' Bless" pack which is an Atlanta music pack that resembles the feel of Atlanta music. The main instrument was a melody loop that has a similar sound to almost like an electric piano. Again the drums and base were already added so I only had to figure out what melody I wanted to use. I think the one I chose really fits in with the drums and bass that was already there and I'm excited that I got the first one done. How the first song looks on my computer What About VocalsI have an idea about what I want to do with vocals. So with BandLab, people can post music and others can fork it, or edit it in their own way. Using this feature, I will release the music to BandLab and allow people to make their own lyrics for my beats. I will then look through the forked music and pick the best one I can find. After finding the best fork, I will ask the creator if I can upload their music to YouTube as a collaboration project. I'm not the best vocalist in the world and instead of asking others for their voices, I will have people use them at will. It makes the most logical sense to me and the smartest thing to do. If I don't get any good vocals with the music, I will upload the music by itself with no vocals. Sometimes music is just good to listen to. You don't have to have words to connect with the actual sounds of music. Moving Forward into Week 5My current plan is to continue the process of making the main instruments of the songs and hopefully finish up 2 more songs this week. That's the plan at least. Who knows, I might end up switching to Jazz music or something. My plans go mostly as planned, but I always end up changing something.
Its week 3 of Genius Hour. A quarter into the project. I can not believe how fast those 3 weeks have just flew by. It seems as if the work I have done hasn't even made some sort of progress towards the end. But it has and now I am going to tell you what I have been working on for the past week of Genius Hour. Official logo Change of PlansThe task of this week's genius hour was for me to create and add a bass to each song. But when I went over to put in the bass, I wanted to change something. Something needed to be changed, so I changed some of the genres of the eight songs. It might seem stupid that now I have multiple genres on an album, but in this case it makes sense. I can show my different skills and show that I can create multiple pieces. It makes it seem as though that cover art was designed to fit this situation though. Seems as though it made sense Why So lateI'm writing this on Monday because of the change in plans. I decided to change last week after I started on this blog. I wasn't able to finish working on Wednesday or Thursday, so I worked over this weekend on changing the styles to some songs. This took me until last night and I was way to tired to sit and write a blog, so I am doing it this morning. It is late as it is Monday, but it was only due to the fact that I changed a major thing in my project. I had to redo some of the drums and do the bass for each of the new songs. Did take some time but all are fully complete with bass and drums. Moving ForwardAs we go into week 4, I plan on beginning to add the main instruments of each track. Since they will all have their own personalities, this will be the longest part of the project. Guitars, pianos, violins, and whatever the instrument may be will need to take time. There is 8 weeks left in this project and I need to get the biggest chunk out of the way. I wish I could add audio clips to these blogs. It would help show the project physically but I do not have the tools to do that. So we are going off of my word simply. I also still have options with vocals. I plan on reaching out to some people to try and get them to do the vocals, but I can also just have the songs be instrumental only. I haven't got to that point yet. It needs to be reached and I'm hoping to get people by week 8 if I go with collaborators. Third option would be for me to do the vocals myself. I'm not a singing person so I don't think that will be a part of the equation. Maybe one song at most I will do vocals for.
It's week 2 of Genius Hour. Last week this website was created as week 1. Now we are diving into the project. This is what I have worked on for week 2 of my Genius Hour project. One of the many logos I have created Behind the BeatsTo begin creating the songs for Genius Hour, I started with the drum beats. Simple beats that will begin the flow of my songs. I found a pattern that I liked and then would loop it throughout the song. This was the main focus for creating the beginning of the songs. Start with the drums, add a beat, add a baseline, and finally add your main instrument or something interesting. What I mean by something being interesting is this instrument stands out. Normally, you wouldn't think to put this in like a country song or a pop song or a rock song, but it actually works well if you have the whole song planned out. An example of what would be called interesting is the trumpet in AJR's "Burn the House Down." The drums to each song were created during this time mostly. Since I have never created real music, I went to the main source for learning, Google. There I was able to find tutorials for simple drum beats by the program that I am using, BandLab. BandLab is a program available online or for IOS/Android. It allows for people to create music online and share it for others to hear. You create all the music online, post it, and can make money off of people "tipping" you for your music. I have it in both app and web form so I can do it wherever I am. BandLab Logo Art, Art, and More ArtAnother focus that I have had for the past 2 weeks is creating all of the cover art. I have made logos, backgrounds, single cover art, and the album cover art. I have decided not to show what they look like. My reasoning behind this is because I want people to be shocked by what they see. I have shown what the album cover would look like. If you look in the "Album" tab, you will find my album cover for this project. This is the only one I want to show so people can get an idea of what some of the song covers will look like. To create this, I am using Canva. I was searching for a way to make the cover art and I came across this and I absolutely love it. I have used this program for all of my logos and cover art so I highly recommend using this program. You can also use it to create Instagram stories and YouTube thumbnails. You can't access all of the images if you are using the free version though. That is my only problem with it. Conclusion of Week 2 and Moving ForwardAs week 3 is around the corner, I hope to begin more of the songs. I plan to add beats to the drums I have laid out and maybe even add the baseline as well. Another thing I hope to do as well is to start finding some good instruments to go along with what I have now, whether it be a trumpet, a violin, or a guitar. There is so much to start thinking about when creating music. I have to plan this song out before I can even begin creating the main portion of the song. With vocals, I am still deciding whether I should have them or not. If I want to have them should I do it myself or have someone else do it in a way I wouldn't think about? Collaborations, solos, or just the music? I still have questions needing to be answered and that is what I need to start thinking about.
